Office Style: Breast Practices

As a woman in an office setting, I get so tired of looking at other women's boobs. You know the women I'm talking about - low-cut dresses and shirts, bras with no padding and skin-tight tees. Seriously, do these women not realize that you can see all the way down to their belly-button when they lean over? Do they not feel the breeze when their shirt has shifted to show a little too much cleavage?

Sure they do, but they like it -cause they know there are others out there that like it too.
Then there's the group of guys that just get embarrased by the whole setting. Their faces turn red when they accidentally see some skin and they blubber all over the place. They make for awkward moments when you just want to walk out of the room.

I actually found a great article on this growing trend:

Cleavage: Coming to an Office Near You

Noticing a bit more cleavage at work? You're not alone. No matter where they are, women seem to be showing off their cleavage more than ever before by wearing plunging necklines and tight tops. Is this simply a fashion trend or are there other factors? According to Elisabeth Squires, author of Boobs: A Guide to Your Girls, American breasts are getting bigger while shirts are getting smaller. But that is only part of the story. A layered style of tight shirts seems to be a major fashion trend fueled by a look that is very popular in Europe.

Whether you shop at American Eagle, Hollister, Wet Seal, or Express, the clothing look pretty much the same. Form-fitting camis and midriff-exposing tops are on display for all ages to embrace. And that is part of the problem. What looks great on a 20-something female can look ridiculous on a 40-year-old. And yes, the weight issue can be part of the problem. To look really great in this clothing, you have to have an almost perfect figure. And lets face it, most of us don't.

Walk around any public place and you will see women with the tell-tale "muffin top" spilling over too tight pants and a low-cut top.Even for those with perfect figures, there is a question of when to use breast power. What is appropriate for an evening out does not necessarily translate into a professional appearance at a board meeting. But that doesn't mean breasts should stay hidden.

According to Squires, the appearance of breasts can help women in the workplace. "A recent study showed men photos of women in a workplace with large breasts showing cleavage, medium breasts and small breasts. When asked about who looked most professional and personable, the men chose the women with medium-sized breasts," she said.

  1. I'm a young twenty-something and I work in a really casual beverage service setting. I have a decent figure but I'm still really conscious of what I wear.

I don't think it's appropriate got me to show a lot of cleavage in the workplace (in most workplaces, anyway. I don't begrudge a bartender for wanting to look sexier). Personally, I don't even like to wear sleeveless shirts of spaghetti straps to work.

I'm not a prude at all but it gets old when people ogle you when you're just trying to work.

Being a young woman I feel that I get taken more seriously when I'm not showing a lot of skin.

  2. This article is spot on. It's ridiculous for these 40 yr old women to be wearing the teen trends. I'm in my 20s, and when I would travel with my late 30's almost 40 year old sales rep, she would wear more revealing clothes than I would. I was in a full suit with close toed heels and hose, and she was in a sleeveless dress with no hose and open toed shoes. She would say, "I thought this was the new trend!" And my response was, "It really doesn't matter, does it?"

I think it's sad when a women feels the need to use her body to get attention in the workplace. Women preach feminism, and then flaunt silly physical attributes to get attention. If they really want to be treated as equals, act like it.

  5. Completely agree. I get so fed up when I see interns come to the office dressed for the clubs. Short skirts and low tops don't belong!

  6. Nice topic. I work in an extremely casual office with LOTS of men. So I wear t-shirts almost every day.

  7. I am a 20-something lawyer in a conservative office with all male partners. I also have a bit of a chest. Most the time I am so covered-up I look like I am ten sizes bigger than I actually am. That being said- any sort of cleavage in the office horrifies me! I would rather look like a dowdy lump than unprofessional.

  8. My boss flips out if he even thinks he sees cleavage. I don't do office cleavage. I think it is very unprofessional. However, my boss is a little too strict when it comes to our clothes.

  9. Just clicked over from I Pick Pretty and am so glad I did!!

One of my superiors had her boobs done last summer and still refuses to buy larger shirts--she claims that's how they fit on normal people! (imagine buttons being pulled to the extreme)...Yikes! I'm small chested, but still usually wear a tank or cami under low-ish cut shirts--at least to the office!

Happy Pills

I'm a crazy person. At least, that's what I feel like some times. And it runs in my family. No, not really crazy (and don't take offense if you are one of me), but just clinically depressed and filled with anxiety. It's as if I don't have something to worry about in my head constantly, then I don't feel normal. Luckily, there's a pill for that. It's a bitter pill, one that I'll basically have to take the rest of my life, but I've slowly accepted that it's like any other disease, and just like diabetes or heart disease, that little pill is gonna make me better. But that little pill makes me gain weight, gives me the brain shivers when I miss it, and although I've tried to get off it multiple times, I just can't. So I guess that makes me an addict as well. But it's a pill that my grandparents and family didn't always have, and they suffer from it as well, so I should be thankful for this little red capsule of happiness...
