Some of you may know that I work closely with a group in Chapel Hill called the Pink Pacers to raise money to fight cancer. I've been with the Pink Pacers for more than five years and we have grown into group of men, women and children who believe in giving back to the local community, promoting healthy living and fighting cancer! Whether it is before, during or post treatment, we care. Over the past 5 years, we have all been affected by so many cancers in men, women and children. Every time we hear of someone diagnosed we think, well…we need to fight one that too. We want to give back and make a different in the local community. This year, we are proud to be part of the first Get Heeled 5K! The Pink Pacers hosted the first ever "Get REAL & HEEL 5K Walk - Bridging the Gap From Treatment to Active Living" this past Saturday and it was an awesome event! We had over 200 people register for the walk, and although it was a bit nippy Saturday morning at 7:45 am, things warmed up significantly throughout the morning and it was a beautiful day for a walk through the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill! Like the larger Avon walks, we had cheering stations throughout the 5K and my friend Jennifer and I were stationed at the first spot, and of course I brought my little guy along with me to help cheer on the walkers! His name is Walker, and when I told him we were going to cheer on the walkers, he said, "Everyone is going to be cheering for me?" If you've been following my blog for a while, you'll remember I participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer last year in Washington, DC and had a wonderful and meaningful experience. I am lucky to be part of a group of women called the Pink Pacers and we have raised more than $111,000 for breast cancer research through the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. We recently made a decision to start doing more in our local community because we wanted to better see the results of our work and make an immediate impact close to home. The local opportunity came to us through an organization called Get REAL & HEEL . The Get REAL & HEEL program is an after care breast cancer program that helps women regain their well-being and quality of life after breast cancer treatment.
