Pinnable Me: Candy Corn

Not many other things symbolize fall and Halloween to more people than good old candy corn. When those orange, white and yellow bags start showing up on the shelves, the Halloween decor typically shows up soon after!

I used to spend school afternoons with my great-grandmother Bessie, and she always kept a small glass dish of candy on the top of her kitchen counter. When it was Christmas, there were peppermints, but the only other thing I ever remember being in that glass jar was candy corn. She would fill it up at the end of summer, and leave it there until it was time to switch for peppermints. I loved sneaking a couple of pieces of candy corn every afternoon, it was a fun treat. But it just seems like the candy corn back then tasted so much better than it does now.

This week I decided to highlight all of the great candy corn ideas I've seen on Pinterest. Hope you enjoy!

A couple of facts about candy corn:
  • Halloween accounts for 75% of the annual candy corn production
  • October 30th is National Candy Corn Day
  • Candy Corn was invented by George Renninger and produced by the Wunderlee Candy Company in the  1880's. In 1900, the Goelitz Candy Company, now  Jelly Belly Candy Company, started mass producing the candy, but, due to the lack of machinery, it was only made available seasonally from March to November. Its recipe has remained unchanged.
  • Candy corn isn't just for Halloween there is also:
    • Reindeer corn for Christmas (red, green, and white)
    • Indian corn (it's chocolate and vanilla flavored)
    • Cupid corn for Valentine's Day (red, pink, and white)
    • Bunny corn for Easter (pastel-colored)
I love the simplicity of this. Simple white candles nestled into candy corn. This would make a great centerpiece or the start of a fun Fall/Halloween mantle.

I've mentioned my sister is as much a Halloween freak as me. I showed her this idea last night and she said she wants to get her toes painted like this for October! That would be cute! Not so sure I could pull it off, but I think kids would certainly love it if a teacher has this manicure (not so much in corporate America).

  1. Cute post! I'm living overseas and all that candy corn is making me miss Fall back home! I haven't seen a single package of candy corn since we've been here. We're now having Spring, but no awesome Easter candy available. Frankly, it's just depressing.

Maybe I can sweet talk my parents into a care package.... : )

  3. An something of a candy corn specialist (addict), I want to do those candles but know I'd burn myself grabbing a fistful of the good stuff in a moment of weakness.

But seriously, I'm excited for all the fun holidays & holiday decor ahead!

Star Wars Gift Bag Tags

Two years ago, for Walker's Star Wars birthday, I created Yoda tags to attach to the gift bags for the party. Little did I know these bag tags would become so popular on Pinterest! To date, these tags have been repinned almost 500 times!!! So I thought since there's so much interest, I'd add them to my Etsy shop . So now, for just $8.00 - you can receive the file electronically and print them for yourself! I jazzed them up a bit with some sliver glitter puff paint on the light saber and some silver ribbon to attach to the dollar store bags. Print as many or as few as you want! So, if you are planning a Star Wars party, check them out ! And may the force be with you!

Baby Shower Inspiration Boards

I got all excited about the baby shower inspiration board contest over at Sippycups Are for Chardonnay , but only ended up submitting this first one on time. I managed to pull the second together this weekend just for kicks and loved the colors, so thought I'd share here. The first board is call "Nesting Instincts" and the second is "Over the Rainbow". I think I could get addicted to creating these things.
