This Weekend in Durham: Bright Lights, Bull City

Fun Shirts at Parker & Otis

If you've been reading my blog for long, you know how much I love Durham, North Carolina. My husband is a born-and-bred Durhamite and I grew up coming here all of the time as a child since it was the biggest city close to Roxboro (and we didn’t have a movie theater).

One of my favorite areas of Durham is the Brightleaf Square district. As a new graduate from college, I used to hang out down there at Devine’s and James Joyce. Now, as a thirty-something mom, I like to spend Saturday mornings with Walker downtown, hitting the farmers market, and walking around, looking for new discoveries and treats.

And the folks over at Durham Magazine must think it's lots of fun too because this Saturday, October 23, they are partnering with 14 downtown businesses and restaurants for a day of food, drink, live music and shopping! So, basically, it's gonna be a big old party downtown! I mean seriously, they had me at food - and shopping too?

The companies participating in the event are some of the most exciting and innovative shops in the area and include:

604 West Morgan Italian Eatery (in West Village)
Adorn Boutique (I visited this new store a couple of weeks ago and love the clothes they have! So comfy and great prices!!)
Alivia's Durham Bistro
Brightleaf Square Management
Fifi's
Hamilton Hill
Magpie Boutique
Morgan Imports
Nomadic Trading Co.
Parker & Otis
Pop's
Posh the Salon
Smitten Boutique
Teresa's on Main

You can read more about the event and download some coupons for the participating vendors on the Durham Magazine blog.

See you there!

  3. I find it disappointing that you say how much you love Durham yet you don't give Durham Public Schools a chance. Supporting DPS is an important part of being a citizen- in all connotations of the term. DPS may not have the demographics of other area schools, but demographics aren't educating the children. The super teachers and choice of schools in Durham make it a great place to place one's children.

  4. I find it disappointing that obviously you know me and know that I send my child to private school yet you chose to be anonymous with your comment. There are multiple reasons why I chose to send my son to a private, Christian school. One being that I've never been impressed with the Durham Public School system and know quite a bit about public schools since both my mother and sister are in the system in another county. The fact that I send my child to private school doesn't mean I love Durham any less, just not crazy about ANY public school system. My son is not only learning basic studies, but is also learning quite a lot about the bible and is being exposed to an amazing curriculum at his current school. My MIL and husband both attended public and private school growing up in Durham and they both had a huge say in wanting my son to attend private school as well. Fortunately, we are able to give him this opportunity, so I've chosen to take it.

Happy Pills

I'm a crazy person. At least, that's what I feel like some times. And it runs in my family. No, not really crazy (and don't take offense if you are one of me), but just clinically depressed and filled with anxiety. It's as if I don't have something to worry about in my head constantly, then I don't feel normal. Luckily, there's a pill for that. It's a bitter pill, one that I'll basically have to take the rest of my life, but I've slowly accepted that it's like any other disease, and just like diabetes or heart disease, that little pill is gonna make me better. But that little pill makes me gain weight, gives me the brain shivers when I miss it, and although I've tried to get off it multiple times, I just can't. So I guess that makes me an addict as well. But it's a pill that my grandparents and family didn't always have, and they suffer from it as well, so I should be thankful for this little red capsule of happiness...
