Hair: Curl Up & Dry

I often get comments and questions about my curly hair, so thought I'd respond to all the questions here.

I haven't always had naturally curly hair. Actually, maybe I did, but maybe I always fought against it with a blow dryer, straightening iron, gel, spray, yadda yadda...

But I have always had BIG hair. I slept in those hard rollers every night in high school so I could puff my hair up really big every day. When I was little, my mom would roll my hair in those pink sponge curlers every Saturday night for Sunday morning church.

About a year ago, I just decided to give up on the fight, go natural. Also, I'm not a morning person, so anything that makes me get a couple more minutes of sleep is totally worth it to me.

I learned this at a salon at a hotel in Charlotte last year. I had just started wearing my hair curly and didn't really know how to do it properly, so a lady at the salon gave me great tips that I still use today.

Scrunch and Twirl:

1. The number one rule to remember to keep natural curl is to touch your hair as little as possible. That means brushing, blowing and product.
2. I use conditioner once a week. This keeps my hair healthy, but not weighed-down. My hair is a little oily so I've never used conditioner a lot. It's up to you as to whether you want to use conditioner every day.
3. I comb my hair with a fine-tooth comb in the shower, but never brush it once I get out or it goes completely limp and messy straight.
3. Once I get out of the shower, I wrap hair in towel for about 5 minutes to towel dry. Don't air dry because the weight of the water on your hair will actually pull the curl out. Evidently, a curl is a very fragile thing! ;-)
4. Then, I take off the towel, brush only my bangs in front out and apply a curl boost mousse. I use different kinds, nothing expensive.Right now I'm using Tresemme Flawless Curls Boost and it works great.
This will take the frizz off the curls. Just don't use a gel because that's when it can get crunchy. And we don't want crunchy hair.
5. Now comes the curl. For Christmas one year I ask for a professional hair dryer from my mom. They are pricey, but SOOOOO worth the money, and mine has a diffuser. That diffuser is the key to good curls - because the hard fast blow without it just makes my curls fall right out. What you basically do here is flip your hair, then twirl your hair loosely into/on top of the diffuser and dry. This technique is hard to describe, but there are lots of videos on youtube.com that show how to do this.
6. Then I set my bangs with some spray and I'm done!

So, that's the steps I take each morning. Sometimes I dry all over, sometimes I just dry my bangs and sides and the back air-drys on the way to work. It sounds like a lot of time, but the whole process really doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes. So that's it. I'm certainly not an expert! Let me know if you have anymore questions and/tips of your own!

Comments

  1. I wish this worked with mine. My hair is super, super curly as in I look like I put my finger in an electrical socket. I straighten, but only wash every 4 days or so. After the first day I only have to touch up the bangs. My daughters can do their hair like you do yours and it does look great, although they tend to run their hands through their hair too often.

  2. Thanks for the tips! I think I will give it a try soon! I too use the irons and so much product, not even sure what my hair would look like without it! Have a great weekend!

  3. I love you.

I would give you a big hug, but you're not here. I watched the whole video, though, and am trying it tomorrow morning :)

  4. SO jealous of your curls. I did it this morning. After the 10 minute drying, I had super tight curls at the bottom, and tight and loose ones at the top that are curled the wrong way!!! They curl forward!!! Ugh. I used a curling iron to "fix" the curls around my face, and it's good now. Trying again tomorrow... but I have some serious curl envy going on here...

Star Wars Gift Bag Tags

Two years ago, for Walker's Star Wars birthday, I created Yoda tags to attach to the gift bags for the party. Little did I know these bag tags would become so popular on Pinterest! To date, these tags have been repinned almost 500 times!!! So I thought since there's so much interest, I'd add them to my Etsy shop . So now, for just $8.00 - you can receive the file electronically and print them for yourself! I jazzed them up a bit with some sliver glitter puff paint on the light saber and some silver ribbon to attach to the dollar store bags. Print as many or as few as you want! So, if you are planning a Star Wars party, check them out ! And may the force be with you!

I got all excited about the baby shower inspiration board contest over at Sippycups Are for Chardonnay , but only ended up submitting this first one on time. I managed to pull the second together this weekend just for kicks and loved the colors, so thought I'd share here. The first board is call "Nesting Instincts" and the second is "Over the Rainbow". I think I could get addicted to creating these things.
