And Off We Go

Tomorrow I'll pack my first school lunch, including a peanut butter sandwich with the crust cut off. I'll take the drive to kindergarten, and walk my little guy to his class. He will hug me goodbye and I will drive off, leaving him in the more-than-capable hands of his teachers.

And I will not cry, I will not cry.

I want to find joy in these moments, experience the excitement of new milestones and experiences, instead of being sad for what has passed.

Today we visited his classroom and met his teachers. He is so excited he can't stand it. He has been begging to be a kindergartner since he graduated from preschool last June.

Today we also visited his preschool and said hello to his old teachers. We stopped by the director's office to make sure it was OK and she said, "We love visitors! But you'll probably only be back two times. The kids very soon start to refer to this as their baby school and they will be too big to come back." I hadn't thought of that.

So, it's a milestone many mommies and daddies are experiencing this time of year, and, like them, I'm sure I will have a nervous lump in my tummy tomorrow morning.

But it's going to be OK. It's just all part of the wonderful experience called parenthood.

  1. It's ok to shed some tears...you're his mommy. This made me cry. Much love to all of you tomorrow and I can't wait to hear about his day.

  2. I was wondering if you were crying or misty-eyed just a little when you were writing this. That cutting the crust off just about did me in. Happy, happy first year of "big" school to you and you hubby and your "big" boy. *sniff*

  6. My little boy just started K this past Friday. I almost teared up that first day but kept it together. It is so fun hearing about his day each afternoon on the way home. I think I appreciate it a little more now than with my daughter (10 years ago) but I am a little older now. Enjoy these sweet days.

  8. Very sweet Wendy...those lumps in your tummy never go away - just dropped Ryan off at his bus stop for sophomore year and my lumps were heavy and real...you just want your kid to continue to do well in his studies, fit in - not give in, and most importantly, embrace each day of his young life....we are all blessed as parents to feel these feelings, don't you think :)

  10. I just dropped off my baby to her first day of 4th grade, I still feel like she should be in 1st grade. And worse, my son went to his first day of 8th grade today! It doesn't seem possible!
Enjoy this school year....they fly by...

Happy Pills

I'm a crazy person. At least, that's what I feel like some times. And it runs in my family. No, not really crazy (and don't take offense if you are one of me), but just clinically depressed and filled with anxiety. It's as if I don't have something to worry about in my head constantly, then I don't feel normal. Luckily, there's a pill for that. It's a bitter pill, one that I'll basically have to take the rest of my life, but I've slowly accepted that it's like any other disease, and just like diabetes or heart disease, that little pill is gonna make me better. But that little pill makes me gain weight, gives me the brain shivers when I miss it, and although I've tried to get off it multiple times, I just can't. So I guess that makes me an addict as well. But it's a pill that my grandparents and family didn't always have, and they suffer from it as well, so I should be thankful for this little red capsule of happiness...
