Unemployment

Right now there are currently 13.2 million people looking for jobs in the United States. Think about that - 13.2 million people - just trying to make ends meet, people that want to work, people that are trying to provide for their families. It ain't a pretty picture.

I personally know more people out of work right now than I've ever known since I've been in the workforce. Guess it makes sense since we are at unemployment levels not seen since 1983.

I know there are lots of people that read my blog, and I wanted to do a special spotlight on two special people in my lives that are currently unemployed to see if anyone out there may be able to help.

First one is my BFF, just relocated back to Atlanta,GA with a law degree. She passed the Georgia bar on her first attempt and is looking for employment. She's passionate about her work, and is doing some legal consulting right now until she finds something (in case you need legal advice). She moved to Baltimore last year when she got married and gave up her job in Atlanta. She and her husband moved to Baltimore to be closer to his dad, who was getting intensive treatment for a progressive form of cancer. Her father-in-law recently passed and they are now living back in Atlanta and she wants to work. If you have any contacts in the area, please e-mail me.

Second one is a long-time friend, located in Raleigh, NC, who is currently looking for employment in the field of HR, or research. I've known her since 1997 and she is great with databases, fact-finding, data sorting and information gathering. Her most recent employment was in an HR group at a local company, and she was laid off. She and her husband are both currently looking for employment. If you know of anyone in the Raleigh/Durham area looking for someone to do this type of work, even on a contract basis, please e-mail me.

Ok, so that's my attempt to boost the economy. Maybe finding these two a job won't make a difference to the overall economic conditions, but it sure would bring some light back into their lives and bring us all some hope that things will get better soon.

  1. For the friend in ATL, I would recommend bankruptcy work. Even if that isn't her dream a lot of small firms are looking for bankruptcy attorneys.

It is tough out there...trust me.

  3. What a great friend you are. I may have to copy this idea for my blog and list myself as one of the unemployed looking for work. Is that tacky? My feeling is...desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm sorry that I don't know anyone in either of those areas - I would love to help! Please keep us updated on their job progress.

  7. You are a sweet friend! I was laid off last year for 8 months and it was a curse and a blessing. Our son wasn't quite 2 yet, so I got to spend some wonderful quality time with him that otherwise I would have missed out on as a working mom. I was greatful to find a job and am thankful everday that I was lucky enough to get back on my feet! Good luck to your friends.

  8. Mrs. Newlywed is RIGHT!! Bankruptcy attorneys have more work than they can do. Sad state of affairs we have, but true. One of my besties is an office manager for a bankruptcy att. and they are super busy!

  10. Best of luck to your friends, its tough right now, but I think if we all can think a little more positively (and quit listening to the gloom&doom on the news) we might be a little better off. It is very sweet for you to post this... :)

Happy Pills

I'm a crazy person. At least, that's what I feel like some times. And it runs in my family. No, not really crazy (and don't take offense if you are one of me), but just clinically depressed and filled with anxiety. It's as if I don't have something to worry about in my head constantly, then I don't feel normal. Luckily, there's a pill for that. It's a bitter pill, one that I'll basically have to take the rest of my life, but I've slowly accepted that it's like any other disease, and just like diabetes or heart disease, that little pill is gonna make me better. But that little pill makes me gain weight, gives me the brain shivers when I miss it, and although I've tried to get off it multiple times, I just can't. So I guess that makes me an addict as well. But it's a pill that my grandparents and family didn't always have, and they suffer from it as well, so I should be thankful for this little red capsule of happiness...
