NYC at Christmas

Our upcoming trip to NYC is less than a month away and I'm getting so excited, I can't stand it. I purchased our train tickets yesterday and although it's going to be a 10-hour ride, I'm kinda looking forward to the experience. I've never been anywhere in the US on a train. Walker is refusing to fly and Mike gets nauseous just thinking about flying, so I thought we'd try the train this time. I will certainly be investing in a portable DVD player for the trip.

I squealed when I saw them bringing in the tree in Time's Square last week! I can't believe we are actually going to get to see it in person this year! It's totally one of my life-long dreams to be in NYC around Christmas!

Since our trip is a kid-friendly one vs. just adults, I've been planning out the spots we should hit and things to do.
Central Park

Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center

I was hoping we could go see the new Spiderman Broadway show with music from Bono, but they've pushed the opening back to January 2011! I'm not really sure there is another Broadway show currently playing that Walker would be interested in! He's never liked The Lion King, but maybe he'd like it on Broadway.

Then of course there's:

Toys R Us in Time's Square
FAO Schwartz
Staten Island Ferry
Top of the Rock
Ground Zero
Zoo
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
American Museum of Natural History

It's gonna be so much fun! What about you guys, ever been to NYC at Christmastime?
Feel free to provide suggestions of places to see and things to do that are great for adults and kids too!

  2. Oh, I'm so jealous! And homesick! As a Native New Yorker I will tell you that there is nothing quite like NYC at the holidays. Enjoy, but be prepared for crowds! Especially at the Tree!

I don't know what Zoo you were planning to head to, but if you're in Manhattan and would rather avoid heading to the Bronx, the Central Park Zoo, although smaller, is beautiful. I'm biased, because I got engaged there. ;) But it's really pretty. And you're in the heart of the park, so it's perfect! FAO Schwartz is right nearby, within walking distance, certainly. As is Tiffany's -- if only just to look. Be sure to spot the snowflake in the sky, as well. It's always been my favorite decoration in Manhattan this time of year.

I can go on and on, but I will spare you. I actually gave some tips (in interview form!) to a fellow blogger who was just there for the Marathon, but kid-free. Oh, you should also try to get to Serendipity for their famous frozen hot chocolate. You don't need to go eat a meal there, just dessert alone is perfect. Or there's always Dylan's Candy Bar ... OK, I should stop now. Shout to me if you need more help! And have funnnnnn!

  3. Oh I just love New York. That's too bad about Spiderman though. Did you know they turned the movie Elf into a Broadway show? That may be perfect for you and your family.

  4. How exciting! I'm going to NYC next month, too! I cannot wait. I've never been before, so I'm looking for travel tips, too! I am beyond thrilled to be going during this fabulous time of the year :)

Can't wait to see all of your pictures and hear about your trip :)

  5. Radio City Music Hall and the Rockettes - fun for kids and adults!

Dylan's Candy Bar - delicious and much photo fodder.

Do try to see a Broadway show- just for the experience. I'm not sure if it's still there but there used to be a place near Central Park called "Tickets Tickets" that had same-day tickets at great prices.

    Have fun!!!

  6. There is no place like NYC at Christmastime. Definitely check out the Macy's window display. If you are doing the broadway show thing, there is a great Italian restaurant called Carmine's. Little Italy and China Town are fun too. Great food for sure. Enjoy!

  7. NYC at Christmas time is wonderful!
I took my daughter several years ago, when she was in the 5th grade, and The Lion King was just a little too long for her. I loved it though!
And I agree, Central Park Zoo is great!

Happy Pills

I'm a crazy person. At least, that's what I feel like some times. And it runs in my family. No, not really crazy (and don't take offense if you are one of me), but just clinically depressed and filled with anxiety. It's as if I don't have something to worry about in my head constantly, then I don't feel normal. Luckily, there's a pill for that. It's a bitter pill, one that I'll basically have to take the rest of my life, but I've slowly accepted that it's like any other disease, and just like diabetes or heart disease, that little pill is gonna make me better. But that little pill makes me gain weight, gives me the brain shivers when I miss it, and although I've tried to get off it multiple times, I just can't. So I guess that makes me an addict as well. But it's a pill that my grandparents and family didn't always have, and they suffer from it as well, so I should be thankful for this little red capsule of happiness...
