Definition: Flexitarianism is a semi-vegetarian diet focusing on vegetarian food with occasional meat consumption. A flexitarian seeks to decrease meat consumption without eliminating it entirely from his or her diet.
Now, I grew up on pork chops, stewed beef, steak, fried chicken and hamburgers, so if I can do it - you can too. I just felt like I needed a fresh perspective on food, and this has really done it for me. I was getting tired of the same old recipes, the same old grocery cart and the same old tastes. I'm not going full-fledged vegetarian right now, but I do feel like my skin looks better and I feel better after cutting out a lot of meat. Albeit, I did try to give blood today and my iron levels were not acceptable, therefore I flunked out of the blood mobile. Yes mom, I have been taking a vitamin, before you ask.
So, that's my latest kick. After my walk and 27 miles and 10 hours of car rides with several vegetarians, I thought I'd give it a try. And guess what - it's really good and hubs and the little man love it. Trader Joe's loves me and I'm actually spending less on groceries - I thought it would be the total opposite!

I've been reading Skinny Bitch, the book, and I know it's been around for a while, but it is a good read if you want to be a (see book title here). If you're easily offended, don't read it. They talk a lot about the meat industry and folks, it ain't pretty. By the way, the authors have also come out with a book, Skinny Bastard (for that precious, pudgy man in your life). BTW, I created some fun items if you're a flexitarian too and want to show the world! Click here to check them out!
i like the way this sounds!
ReplyDeleteThat's such a cool term I've never heard of that before but I guess that's what I am! Thanks for sharing!!

Flexitarian is actually a really, really good way to get more veggies in your diet and actually isn't that hard to get steak eatin hubbies to join! Mine loves eating salad for dinner twice a week now, imagine that!
ReplyDeleteThis is the perfect diet for me. I should read this Skinny Bitch book. I used to be super skinny but I've gained 20 pounds - or 25 - since high school. Oh, the long gone days of being a skinny bitch myself!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with veggies..love to eat lots and lots of salads myself...I'm not big on alot of meat especially red meat..I do alot of stir fry so loads of veggies there and maybe alittle chicken..
ReplyDeleteI have heard this term before. I love me some meat but have definitely cut down on the red meat as I try to lose weight. I will have to investigate this "movement" wouldn't hurt us to be meat free a couple days a week, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteMolly's info had me thinking too...I have been beating myself up about it since the walk! I like your take on it!
ReplyDeleteJamie would never go for it (although sometimes I sneak in the occasional soy fake meat product), but I have really cut him waaaaaay back in the meat dept.
ReplyDeleteI won't kick myself too hard about the hamburger I ate today! ( first one in about a year- just had to have it) glad i found your blog.
ReplyDeleteI could totally do this! I go weeks without eating meat anyways, so this wouldn't be too hard for me. But...now and then....I just gotta have a good steak.
ReplyDeleteLove your new look!!! Welcome to the other side... from, your #1 veg. fan!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a flexitarian - we eat don't eat red meat, only chicken and seafood, and make vegetables the mainstay of our diet. Vegetables and cheesecake, that is. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love this term!! I am a flexatarian and I didn't even know it!! Since Jan I have been trying to cut down on my mean consumption and add protein in other places like beans! Thanks so much for sharing this, I'm going to check the info out!!
